GAVIN GOODMAN
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have been a photographer for over twenty years. Early in my career, alongside my advertising and fine art work, I also photographed weddings under a pseudonym. More than two hundred of them. It was an unusual way to spend my weekends. Most people only ever attend the weddings of their own family and friends. I found myself standing inside the ceremonies of strangers, across faiths and cultures I did not belong to.
What stayed with me had little to do with belief. Even couples who were not religious or observant would reach a moment when the formality fell away and something else emerged. These rites, passed down for generations, gave shape to a deeply felt connection.
MOYA comes from that feeling. Not from any one tradition, but from the gestures that surfaced in all of them: the body covered, the skin marked, a weight carried, a form raised above the head, a shape drawn around the figure. In each work, a single white form meets the body, something
invisible becoming briefly, powerfully, beautifully visible.
