GAVIN GOODMAN
Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Gavin Goodman was immersed in the rich beauty of African culture from an early age. He began his career as a cinematographer in the local film industry, primarily shooting TV commercials, before transitioning into commercial and fine art photography. In 2021, he was awarded the prestigious Hasselblad Masters in the Art category. Goodman’s work merges traditional African elements with a clean, modern aesthetic, characterised by a minimalist approach to composition, refined lighting, and a complementary pastel colour palette. More recently, he has been integrating AI into his creative process, using it as an extension of his artistic expression. His recent exhibitions include Africa Foto Fair (February 2023) and a solo show in Abidjan (May 2024).

The artist’s words:
“It's beautiful how art is just beyond paint and canvas. It has a lot to do with the unseen spirit. As such, the spirit manifests itself physically through a painting. As an artist, it feels like the deeper, courageous, and adventurous one goes into themselves, is the wider, higher the elevation to self. It is the more the spirit can trust you with its life secrets. The trick is that it needs to find your ground soft enough to receive its seed. With that said, the question has never been about what am I here to do?, but to understand the answer, I have already answered. That I'm actually the answer to the question. I was already born before I was born, I gave birth to myself. This series of work, unveiled to me that I have always been, l have existed in many forms before ,as my grandfather, great grand mother, and so many that came before them. In each generation, our task was to understand and enjoy the journey and discovery of the spirit. To live in abundance, realizing that we are not awaiting heaven but that we are heaven and that paradise is now.I'm the Echo of my ancestors's many songs by the fire. Many cries in loss, and many hopes in a sunrise felt. Art has allowed me to process and articulate well the spiritual journey of discovery. It has unshackled all the traumas of my past self. It has opened me up to understanding that I am the drum beater and the drumbeat. I'm the created and the Creator, Me exploring my ancestors doesn't take away that I'm the Echoe of God.“ Reggie Khumalo
